Front Yard Landscaping May 2006

Earlier in the year, we decided enough was enough and we were pulling out all of the funky grass in our front yard, partially because it just looked bad, but also to save some money on water and to take advantage of the Clark County grass-for-cash rebate program. Here is the third week of poisoning the grass (they told me it was easier to remove dead, but I think it may also be because they sub-contract the removal and the turf guys charge per pound)

Front view before...our neighbors would drive by and stare at us like we were hillbillies

...and after. We put in a new drip system, 20 five gallon plants, some boulders, a Joshua Tree, two Century plants from dad's yard in Tucson, and a "hedge" (once it grows in, anyway) of Oleanders on the property line.

There are two different sizes/colors of rock, 1" Champagne rock from northern NV, and 3/8" Peach Blossom as a flowing path through the property. I really like the way it turned out, and Shock's Landscaping did a great job throughout the entire process. The first few days, all of the neighbors driving by would drive slow, or some would stop and back up to check out the yard.

This Joshua Tree was a last minute addition, I'm glad we did...it cost a little bit more than we expected, but it is a nice plant and the import/export restrictions on them is so tight, they are somewhat rare in landscaping it seems...they gave us a little yellow proof-of-ownership tag along with it--I read that it is a very hefty fine for poaching cacti from Arizona, big problem with the illegals looking for income
